Why do fireplaces and BBQs need special high-heat paint?

How long does high-heat paint last, and why does it fail?
With correct rating and cure, high-heat paint on a fireplace or grill lasts 2-5 years before cosmetic touch-up is needed. Failure modes:
1. Discoloration (browning/whitening): The #1 complaint — almost always means the paint rating was too low for the actual surface temperature. Upgrade one rating class.
2. Blistering and flaking: Usually from grease/soot contamination under the paint, or a heavy first coat that trapped solvent. Re-clean and re-apply thin coats.
3. Rust bleed-through: Surface rust was not removed before painting, or the coating was scratched. Rust creeps under the coating and lifts it.
